MARKING CRITERIA OF NAATI CCL TEST

The evaluation standards for the NAATI CCL Test primarily focus on how precisely and naturally you convey meaning between English and your selected language.

There will be 2 dialogues in this exam, each dialogue will carry 45 marks. So,
Total marks – 90
Passing marks – 63 out of 90
Minimum 29 marks in both the dialogues is a must.

The responses will be assessed on several criteria, and we will discuss all of them one by one.

Major Mistakes:

1. Meaning Transfer (Most Important)

This is the major factor.

Examiners check whether:

• You translated the full meaning correctly
• No important information is missed
• No wrong additions are made
• Tone and intention remain same

You lose marks for:

• Omissions (missing information) : If you miss or skip any important information of the segment.

For e.g. :
If speaker says: I am going to watch a movie next Thursday with my best friend.

Student says: I am going to watch a movie.

So, this will be considered a major mistake of omission as the information is not fully translated/covered.

• Distortions (changing meaning): If you change the whole meaning of the segment.

For e.g. :
If speaker says :

I’ve booked my appointment with the doctor on Friday morning.

Student response:

I am playing football with my friend.

So, this is complete distortion as the meaning of the whole segment is wrongly translated.

• Additions (adding your own words/info): If you add any other information on your own in the segment.

For e.g. :

If speaker says:

Hi, how can I help you today?

Student response:

Hi, how are you? How can I help you today?

So, this will be counted as addition as major information “how are you” has been added.

2. Quality of the Language:

These are minor factors, but still these should be avoided while translating the segments.

These factors are:

• Grammar
• Vocabulary
• Sentence structure
• Natural fluency
• Appropriate use of words/ no slang words
• No mixing of languages
• No excessive pauses
• No self-correction

Your translation should sound natural, not AI.

KEY POINT TO NOTE:

Do not try to translate word to word. Remember, you just need to convey the same meaning of the segment. So, keep your tone natural.
